Headlines from the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas on Friday, October 13

The Israeli military has confirmed for the first time that ground troops have entered the Gaza Strip as conflict in the Middle East continues. It comes after Palestinians began a mass exodus from northern Gaza on Friday after Israel’s military told some one million people to evacuate.

Elsewhere, AP reports that an Israeli shell landed in a gathering of international journalists covering clashes on the border in south Lebanon, killing a Reuters videographer and leaving six other journalists injured. It is estimated that the war has claimed at least 2,800 lives on both sides since Hamas' initial attack on southern Israel on October 7, with Israel placing the 25-mile Gaza Strip under siege and subjecting it to retaliatory air strikes. Hamas has said Israel’s bombardment killed 13 hostages, including foreigners, held by the group.

The UK prime minister told broadcasters at the Joint Expeditionary Force summit in Gotland, Sweden: “Of course we should always — and we are always — having concerns of civilians paramount in our minds. An AP photographer at the scene reportedly saw the body of Reuters videographer Issam Abdallah and the six who were wounded, some of whom were rushed to hospitals in ambulances. Images from the scene showed a charred car.

'Massive increase' in antisemitic offences - Met Police London has seen a “massive increase” in antisemitic incidents - from the playing of German military music to intimidation outside synagogues - the Metropolitan Police said. It comes as one Jewish school in north London said it is planning to increase the height of its fence amid security fears in the area. Contractors working at Ateres Beis Yaakov primary school in Hendon, which was closed on Friday, said they had been asked to “raise the fence” to make it harder for people to “reach over”.

He condemned the attacks by Hamas, saying “our hearts are broken open” by the grief of Israelis and Jewish people “for whom this trauma and loss stands in the dark and terrible shadow of the worst days of their history”.
