After last Saturday's surprise attack on Israel by Palestinian militant group Hamas, Shelby Ungerman and Toronto community members started a bread-baking drive, selling traditional Jewish challah to help raise more than C$12,000 in 48 hours for Israel.
Since then, donations and support in the form of essential goods have been pouring in from across Canada, as the country's roughly 335,000-strong Jewish community came together to help friends and families recover from the deadliest attack on civilians in Israeli history.
Jerusalem-based Alex Katz, 42, a United Hatzalah medic and ambulance driver originally from the United States, has raised $100,000, through his synagogue with many charitable donations coming from Canada. He's also supplying traditional fringe tassels – tzitzit – to less religious Jews seeking some spiritual comfort.
Another cargo plane has been filled and is waiting to take off, said Elan Mazer from Montreal, Director of religious group Mizrachi Canada, which has raised C$500,000.
