Preeminent thinkers in the realm of architecture and urban planning raise red flags around the city's plan to offload five blocks of downtown land.

. The volunteer group of nearly two dozen local leaders and stakeholders was organized by Gloria in September in advance of marketing San Diego’s Civic Center real estate for lease or sale.

“My observation... is that there’s no way that, in 60 days, you’re going to get proposals that even begin to address the kind of stuff that Jennifer was talking about,” said Frank Wolden, an urban design expert who runs his own studio and previously worked for both the city and its downtown redevelopment agency. “It sounds to me like we’re just doing what San Diego always does — I hate to be a cynic — but just jumping to a conclusion on something.

San Diego will simultaneously undertake a separate, municipal process to construct a new City Hall at 1222 First Ave., where the City Administration Building is today.
