“Rocketing house prices, stagnating wages, loss of community, ludicrous living costs, air, noise and light pollution... For the first time, I find myself wondering if I might be tired of London.”
It should be quickly clarified that my “real” early years were spent in north London, escaping to Warwickshire only for weekends and holidays. I was raised, for all intents and purposes, a Londoner, but, when I turned 13, the countryside beckoned to my mother, and we resettled in Oxfordshire, in a small village just beyond the Ring Road. I was devastated. I entered Year 9 as a new girl alongside two others.
In the years that followed, I devoted myself to experiencing city life, whether at home or abroad. I travelled to modernist European capitals, pointing my camera at their roughest neighbourhoods, studying the concrete and detritus . I began to walk and walk in the mode of the flâneuse, a student of psychogeography and dérive – a follower of Gertrude Stein in Paris, grasping at the street-level flux of the city.
