Fine Gael leader - the first gay and ethnic minority Taoiseach - fights back tears as he announces he is stepping down
Taoiseach Leo Varadkar speaking to the media at Blair House in Washington DC, during his visit to the US for St Patrick’s Day The Taoiseach confirmed his resignation in an emotional statement outside Government Buildings in Dublin shortly after noon, describing his tenure as “the most fulfilling time of my life”.

In 2017, Mr Varadkar became the first gay prime minister of Ireland, the first from an ethnic minority and the youngest person to hold the office. He played a leading role in campaigns to legalise same-sex marriage – approved in a 2015 referendum – and to repeal a ban on abortion, which passed in a vote in 2018.
Mr Martin was appointed in 2020 with Mr Varadkar serving as his tánaiste . The two swapped roles in 2022. Sinn Féin President Mary Lou McDonald, who is leader of the Opposition, called for a general election. She said it was “unthinkable” for the the next taoiseach to be chosen by a “conclave” of Fine Gael politicians. This is a time for fresh leadership. Not just a change of taoiseach, but a change of government, and a change of direction,” she said.
