State TV had earlier stopped all its regular programming to show prayers being held for Mr Raisi across the country. For years, many have seen Mr Raisi as a strong contender to succeed him. Contact has been made with a passenger and a crew member of the Iranian president's helicopter, an official has told state TV. Our Middle East correspondent Alistair Bunkall says this marks a"really significant development".
There are also many dissident groups inside Iran too, including an off-shoot of Islamic State - will they seek to take advantage of this situation. The challenge facing search and rescue teams is immense, with heavy fog, rain and in darkness. Hope is fading. "I should say not a lot of information has been coming out, which is not unexpected because of two reasons," he said.
