SSPCA hopes jailing of Tom and William Mongan will set a precedent on puppy crime. Investigators warn of increase in trade in badly bred and critically ill puppies
Puppy investigators are warning of a flood of sales of potentially sick pets from illegal farms at Christmas.
The brothers were part of a gang that travelled from town to town, selling pups from properties rented from Airnbn, creating the false image of pets being sold from gamily homes. Among then was tiny Freya, who was sold as a beagle. She died in owner Sophie Gerrard Jones's arms after days of desperate nursing ended in heartache.“The pain and suffering the puppies endured while in their care is unthinkable. We hope no other animal will be caused suffering by them.
Tom and William Mongan were convicted after the SSPCA brought forward evidence relating to pets which were later put down due to ill health. Tom Mongan pled guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to three charges of causing unnecessary suffering while William Mongan admitted two charges. The charges span between December 2020 and February 2021.She said: “We hope that this result will send out the message that selling sick and dying pups may result in incarceration.
After an explosion in the puppy trade, more and more owners are giving their pets up, leading to a flood of intakes at Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centres, which are now full.
