The ramen restaurant opened its first U.S. storefront in San Mateo three years ago.

“We have been working hard to expand our dining experience to better reach our guests across the bay area,” Taishoken wrote on Instagram. “SF has been in our sights since we first opened our doors in San Mateo. This would have not been possible if it was not for the support of the community throughout the pandemic.”

Sakagachi, the grandson of Masayasu Sakaguchi who founded Nakano Taishoken in 1951 in Japan, told Eater SF that when he found the forthcoming San Francisco site this year, he was drawn to the area's “atmosphere” and “traffic.” Once opened, the Taishoken in San Francisco will become both the second Bay Area and U.S. location to date.

The San Francisco space is expected to get a revamp and have more flair than its San Mateo counterpart where it will seat up to 50 guests. TableHopper reports that the SF menu will also include more appetizers, new specials, and eventually cocktails and other mixed drinks once the business officially secures a full liquor license. SFGATE spotted that Taishoken had applied for a type 41 beer and wine license back in March.
