Hoping to fly to Paris or Tokyo this year? Brace yourself for sticker shock.
nternational jet setters are in for some sticker shock this summer. Sky-high demand and lower supply on international routes is driving airfares to a five-year high, according to the airfare-tracking siteAnother determining factor is jet fuel prices, which remain about 16% higher than pre-pandemic levels but have dropped 40% from this time in 2022. Even so, prices remain the highest they’ve been since late 2014.
So what’s a good deal these days? For fares to Europe, Hopper economist Hayley Berg says $1,032 roundtrip is a decent price, a 35% jump from last year. A roundtrip ticket to Africa will set you back $1302, on average, up 21% from last year. Flying to Australia or New Zealand are running just north of $1700, a 14% hike since 2022.In comparison, flights to Canada are a relative good deal. The average airfare is just 2% more expensive than in 2022 and 10% higher than before the pandemic.
If price is an issue, there’s a silver lining to staying in the good old United States. The good news in Hopper’s report is that domestic round-trip airfare is currently averaging $285 per ticket, down 15% compared to this time last year. Fares are roughly in line with 2019 levels, only 1.4% higher than prices in April 2019.
