Mark Danaj is accused of misleading Fremont’s City Council while negotiating a severance package during his final days on the job in 2021.
Fremont’s embattled former city manager is facing new accusations of fraudulently concealing his misuse of a city-issued credit card to land a final, nearly-300,000 check from the city while on his way out, according to a new criminal complaint.
His travel abroad came to an abrupt end last month when prosecutors — incredulous upon learning Danaj left the country while facing felony charges here — successfully persuaded a judge to revoke his passport. He was two weeks shy of completing the course, imperiling his ability to graduate, according to his defense attorney.
Three days after the check arrived, Danaj’s attorney contacted the city seeking to “reconcile” his “city credit card statements,” and to “provide any necessary reimbursement,” court records show. In filing the latest felony charge, prosecutors only focused on the portion of Danaj’s severance package that pertained to his salary. No mention was made in their court filings of additional payments that were promised to Danaj, including a total of $22,325 in monthly installments from November 2021 through August 2022 to cover his health benefit costs.
