The site can support up to eight fabs and, according to Intel, the company’s investment in the site could grow to $100 billion over the next decade.
Areal rendering of the new Intel facility in OhioLast March, Intel announced IDM 2.0, a plan to increase manufacturing for Intel products and to provide dedicated capacity for foundry services. When elaborating on the plan, Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger indicated that the company was considering sites all over the United States, and he wasn’t joking. Today, Intel announced plans to build two new fabs on a 1,000-acre site just outside of Columbus, Ohio.
The announcement is a bit of a shock as semiconductor manufacturing has slowly dwindled to a handful of locations around the U.S. Even Intel has slowly consolidated investments over the past two decades with the bulk of the investment in manufacturing sites in Arizona and Oregon, as well as upgrades to a facility in New Mexico.
There is always excitement when a major semiconductor company announces the search for a new fab location because a fab is more than just a building and manufacturing equipment. A fab requires infrastructure enhancements for power, water, and pure chemical distribution and a labor force skilled in semiconductor technology, to be drawn from local colleges and vocational schools.
While this infrastructure can be established over time, semiconductor companies typically opt for locations where these resources are already in place, for obvious reasons. While Ohio is not known for semiconductor manufacturing, according to Steve Leibson, Principal Analyst at Tirias Research,"Ohio has a rich history in the semiconductor industry. As an example, Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, has been making chips since the early 1970s.
