'What are you most excited about? Find a way to do it. Find a way to get closer to that,' says Eva Chen, Director of Fashion Partnerships at Instagram

Chen’s latest passion fulfills a lifelong dream and has cast her in a new role: children’s book authorblends the many facets of Chen’s world with a namesake character that’s “a sassy, strong girl who discovers empowerment through fashion.” The inspiration for this fresh take on a fairytale came to Chen after reading countless books to her own children, Ren and Tao.

I recently sat down with Chen to discuss how to win on Instagram, the most important lesson she learned from Anna Wintour, and why it all comes down to authenticity. Edited highlights below.“Success in my life today, at this very moment, is: Are my kids fed, are they happy, are they laughing more than they’re crying, and do they feel safe, are the lights on? Literally, I’m in survival mode. And I’m not trying to be cheeky.

“If it’s professional success, it’s pride in your work and pride in yourself. Do you feel like you’ve done everything you can, not just at work, but also on a human level? Have you helped someone else? Are you helping further the narrative, whatever narrative is important to you? Is it the environment, is it women’s rights? Is it helping a sibling or a spouse? To me, that is success.

“A survival method of being a mom is compartmentalizing. When I get home I’m in full-on mom mode. I’m not checking email. I’m not sitting at a laptop. I’m literally playing choo-choo trains with my kids and pushing them across my hallway in a laundry basket.” “It’s ruthless prioritization. A lot of the time I’ll get an invite to a dinner party and it’s like, ‘do I put my kids to bed or go to a fashion party?’ My kids win 97% of the time. But if Oprah calls me, sorry.”“A lot of young people ask me, ‘How did you know you wanted to make the switch from law to magazines, or from magazines to tech?’ I didn’t. I just didn’t. I tried it because I was interested in it. I followed my gut and followed what I was enjoying at the time and was passionate about.
