The BTR event attracts thousands from all over the world each year
The 30th anniversary BTR event will see a staggering 9,000 runners venture through the city on St Patrick’s Day. Starting at 9am from the Pier Head on the Waterfront, the 13.1-mile route takes runners through the city and onto Sefton Park, taking in sights along the way including Royal Albert Dock Liverpool, Liverpool Cathedral, and Museum Of Liverpool.
Jamie Doolan, from Broadgreen, has finished every race in Liverpool since it was first staged in 1994. This is no mean feat for the 53-year-old nurse who was told he would struggle to walk due to a problem with his legs at birth. Jamie went on to have them straightened splints, then aged 21, had pins inserted to strengthen his right ankle.
Joining Jamie at all 30 Liverpool events has been Stephen Symons from Salford. The 58-year-old runs for Quays Running Club in Manchester. Despite suffering from a brain haemorrhage in November 2012, Stephen was able to complete the half marathon race the following year with the help of his partner Miranda and brother Michael. Stephen has since made a full recovery and continues to take part yearly.
"Ironically enough, I was out on a training run when I had a bleed on the brain. It felt like someone had hit me over the head with a cricket bat. It was banging. To be honest, before that, I never even heard of a subarachnoid haemorrhage. The ex-soldier now wears a blade to run and won two gold medals at the Invictus Games 2014. He told the ECHO: “I was really into my running at one point but haven’t been as much lately. So this for me is just a way to get back into it and get the juices flowing again.
Also pulling on her running shoes is mixed martial artist UFC Strawweight ‘Meatball’ Molly McCann. The 33-year-old is running with others from the Baltic Market, where she co-owns eatery Polpetta with friend Joel McCarthy. The group are running for Clatterbridge Cancer Charity and also fundraising for Molly’s friend Ryan Curtis, who was paralysed while training in January.
