The November 20, 1947, marriage of Princess Elizabeth to Philip, Prince of Greece and Denmark, was no ordinary affair—and not just because of the stature of the couple. At the end of World War II, their bright future seemed synonymous with blue skies ahead for the battle-scarred and still-recovering island nation.
Lewis Miller’s approach to his Elizabeth–inspired bouquet was aligned perfectly with the contained ebullience of the royal wedding and its aesthetics. “I wanted the bouquet to feel and look structured and wild at the same time,” explains the florist—aka the Flower Bandit—who achieved the desired look by using hand-tie and hand-wiring techniques.
A piece of myrtle is also nestled into the Princess Margaret–inspired bouquet created by Ariel Dearie for Vogue. It’s surrounded by ranunculus, hellebore, scented geranium, and mock orange, which has, notes Dearie, a “heavenly scent of orange blossoms and jasmine.” The blue-eyed royal held the world’s attention on July 29, 1981, the day she married Prince Charles. Theirs was “the wedding of the century,” and there was nothing understated about it at all—from the pouf-sleeved David and Elizabeth Emanuel wedding dress with its 40-foot train to her suitably dramatic—and very ’80s—cascading wedding bouquet of odontoglossum orchids, gardenias, stephanotis, lily of the valley, fressia, veronica, ivy, myrtle, tradescantia, and Earl Mountbatten roses .
