A Leeds couple converted their boat into a bookshop to liven up the community
Chris and Victoria Bonner, both 49, turned their boat, a barge named Marjorie R, which dates back to 1946, into Hold Fast Bookshop. They opened it in back in November 2022 and it's still very much afloat - in fact business has been booming for the pair, who have two grandkids, ever since.
The floating book shop is moored near the Royal Armouries Museum, opposite The Canary bar. Chris and Victoria have such a passion for most things literary and nautical. Prior to opening the shop, Chris, from Grimsby, spent many years as a skipper for Leeds’ water taxi service and Victoria, from Horsforth, who was a mental health counsellor, also had experience working as a librarian.
Victoria said: “We’d lived here for quite a while and Leeds can be quite a lonely place. There’s so many people but not really many opportunities to just chat to people. There’s not a great deal to do. So, we thought a bookshop would be a good hub for the community.” The couple did most of the work themselves, shaping it into a spacious, yet cosy shop floor, complete with outdoor seating, shelves, a reading nook - which also doubles as an event space, and even a greenhouse where customer can purchase plants. The shop is open Thursdays to Sundays.
