The social media campaigns sit alongside increasingly sophisticated cyber attacks on physical infrastructure attributed to Iranian groups both prior to and since the Hamas attacks. They include switching off water controllers on Israeli farms, setting off emergency air raid rocket sirens, tampering with petrol pump controls and causing the lights in homes with digital control panels to switch on and off during the night, according to monitoring bodies and experts.
Dr Tehilla Schwartz Altshuler, a technology and law specialist at the Israel Democracy Institute, an independent Jerusalem-based think-tank, said Iran was increasingly developing its own broad spectrum of cyber capabilities. She said: “I think what we are seeing here is another planned and targeted dimension of warfare.
Dr Shwartz Altshuler also pointed to postings on a X account which she said had also been identified by Shin Bet as operated by Iranian assets. The postings, put online within days of the Hamas attack on southern Israel, consist of images of IDF commanders and an Iron Dome anti-rocket battery along with an email address and account details for the Dubai-based Telegram messaging service, and offer 200,000 shekels in return for location intelligence.
