Completed in just over a year, an already fast construction schedule by today’s standards, the office tower was finished five months ahead of schedule in 1927.
Even from 33 stories up in downtown San Francisco, I don’t have a full panoramic view of the bay. My sweeping view, which includes Coit Tower, Alcatraz and as far east as Mount Diablo, is blocked by the Transamerica Pyramid's iconic spire. It’s quiet on the rooftop of 235 Montgomery St., nestled in the middle of San Francisco’s skyscrapers and high-rises. The only sound is the hoisting of an American flag as a new one is slid up the tower’s rooftop pole.
Steeplejack Kells Phelan reaches the top of the flag pole for post-storm repairs on the roof of 235 Montgomery, on Friday, Feb. 10, 2023.Emanuel Charles Christian Russ was a silversmith, a German immigrant who had recently moved to San Francisco from New York City. He purchased the land on which the building sits in 1847, from what was then the settlement of Yerba Buena, for a bargain: $26 ; still, it was cheap — less than $3,000 in today’s dollars.
The earthquake and fire of 1906 ended the hotel’s reign, and a three-story office building was built in its place. It stood until it was demolished in 1925 in preparation for a grander addition to the large and valuable swath of downtown land. The opening of the building “marked a new era” for downtown San Francisco. It featured a “gymnasium, women’s clubroom and many unusual conveniences,” as well as a barber shop and a law library — all located on the building’s 11th floor. Inaugural tenants included the United States Steel Products Company, General Electric, and “more than a score of leading financial firms” like Goldman Sachs and Merrill Lynch.
