Insecure writer Phil Augusta Jackson hopes his new show Grand Crew leads to more Black content on television. Jackson, who is known for his writing on Insecure and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, brings his sitcom expertise to act as showrunner for his newest show Grand Crew. Jackson also serves as executive producer for the new series alongside Dan Goor, who worked with him on Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Grand Crew premiered in December 2021 on NBC.
Grand Crew follows a group of friends in L.A. who gather at a wine bar to recap their lives for each other. The series stars Nicole Byers, host of Netflix's Nailed It!, Echo Kellum, known for his role on Arrow, and newcomers Justin Cummingham, Aaron Jennings, Carl Tart, and Grasie Mercedes. The group is lead by Nicky , a driven real estate agent who is adventurous in love, and her brother Noah , who falls in love too easily.
“I would say overall that there is room for more Black content period. My hope is that there’s more Black content period moving forward. I think overall with this show specifically that was not top of mind for me. It wasn’t about filling a void. However I am a black man, I do hang out at a wine bar with my friends and we do unpack the ups and downs of our lives and that felt like the most exciting and honest idea to bring to the table at NBC.
Having worked on two very successful sitcoms before, Jackson obviously knows the ingredients necessary to create a hit. So far, with only seven episodes released, Grand Crew seems set for that success. The sitcom has addressed topics that are still under-represented and under-explored in mainstream media with light-hearted humor. Fans have also praised Grand Crew's portrayal of Black relationships, especially between the male characters.
Despite Jackson's words about not aiming to"[fill] a void," shows like Insecure ending last year and ABC's Black-ish airing its final season this year have taken away some of the most popular and beloved Black-led comedies. But as Jackson says, there is more than enough room for an increase in Black content on screens, and Grand Crew has the opportunity to be part of furthering this representation.
