Health Secretary Steve Barclay said the families affected deserve to get answers
The inquiry into baby killer Lucy Letby’s ‘horrific’ crimes is set to investigate the conduct of staff and wider NHS culture and governance issues in a bid to uncover how the nurse was able to carry out the killing spree.
The offences took place at the Countess of Chester Hospital’s neonatal unit, where Letby worked, between June 2015 and June 2016. In August the inquiry became statutory and was granted the power to compel witnesses, including former and current staff of the Countess of Chester, to give evidence after facing pressure from bereaved families.
Thirdly, the effectiveness of governance, external scrutiny and professional regulation in keeping babies in hospital safe, including consideration of NHS culture.
