Inquest into death of murdered Blackpool dad Mark Gibson closed after criminal convictions
A coroner has issued an update on an inquest into the death of a Blackpool dad who was murdered by an "out of control mob".
Stephen Pugh, 49, Tina Walton, 43, Sean Neil, 42, and Stephanie Steel, 38, were found guilty of Mr Gibson's murder following a trial at Preston Crown Court earlier this year. A fifth defendant, Aaron Chadwick, 33, was convicted of manslaughter and the five defendants were sentenced to a total of 92 years in prison.The crown court trial heard that the five defendants acted as an "out of control mob with a lust for retribution" during the brutal attack.
Home office pathologist, Dr Alison Armour said the wound was so deep it cut through Mr Gibson's bone and penetrated his chest cavity, causing an injury so serious Mr Gibson would collapse within a minute of it being inflicted. If someone is convicted of murder, manslaughter or causing death by dangerous driving following a trial, the coroner will close the inquest at that point with an automatic verdict of unlawful killing. There is no need to hold a hearing as all the evidence has already been examined in open court.
