The Indian government has banned TikTok and 58 other Chinese apps, citing security concerns
for a boycott of Chinese products after a deadly border clash between the two neighbouring countries earlier this month.... [+]The ban, issued by India Ministry of Electronics & IT, applies to the video-sharing app TikTok, file transfer app Shareit and messaging app WeChat, among others.
The ministry states that the decision was taken after it received “many complaints” of some smartphone apps “stealing and surreptitiously transmitting users’ data in an unauthorized manner to servers which have locations outside India.” The order claimed that data from India is compiled, mined and profiled by elements “hostile to national security and defence of India.”
Stating that the move will safeguard the interests of millions of Indian mobile and internet users, the ministry added that, “This decision is a targeted move to ensure safety and sovereignty of Indian cyberspace.”between India and China in the disputed Himalayan region left 20 Indian soldiers dead. Following the deaths, celebrities, politicians and members of the public had called for a boycott of all products made in China., “The decision to ban the apps appears to be largely a political one. There hasn’t been any significant change to the way that these apps work in the last 3 months, and the announcement looks like it has been made to send a signal to China.
