Many Indians fear population survey in 2020 could be used to build a controversial citizens register which combined with the citizenship law could be used against Muslims
Protesters hold placards at a demonstration against India's new citizenship law in New Delhi on December 24, 2019.

They say the law and a proposed national register of citizens could be used against the Muslim minority. The CAA aims to fast-track citizenship for persecuted Hindus, Parsis, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains and Christians who arrived in India before December 31, 2014, from Muslim-majority Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan.
A Tamil Nadu government official who oversees Sri Lankan refugees in the state did not return calls seeking comment.
