The author talks about the upside of upheaval and finding time to make art.

brim with warmth and humor. Her fourth book is no exception., which is due out Jan. 31, features artist Lauren and professor Leo and their children, in-laws, friends and frenemies. It’s set largely in a New York City brownstone that houses a neighborhood bar in the basement. A business opportunity for Lauren sets dozens of plates spinning, and more than a few crash. Women with not much in common find themselves somehow responsible for a baby who belongs to none of them.

The title came to me right away. I knew I was going to have a young family moving into a grand Greenwich Village brownstone. And I started to feel like they were just a little too lucky to have such fabulous living arrangements. One way to offset the grandeur was to add a famed dive bar just below ground level of the building and to populate it with NYU students, neighbors and the occasional jazz players.

What appeals to me about rage in fiction is that it can have a kind of velocity, an energy that makes characters act in unexpected ways. When Melinda’s husband of 30 years leaves her for a much younger woman, she is hellbent on a scorched-earth response to his abandonment. I don’t know if I see it as sweetness, but I did want Melinda to emerge from this rage in a different — arguably better — place.
