District officials are rolling out a proposal to stave off a $12 million budget shortfall by repurposing underutilized schools.

The district is proposing consolidating schools because of a budget shortfall.More than 100 residents listened to a grim presentation Tuesday evening on Harlandale Independent School District’s historically low enrollment and the consequences — less state funding and the possible closure of four elementary schools.
“But getting the information… and having to sit with it a little bit more, I know it’s necessary,” she added. “I’d rather our teachers have choices and be able to choose the schools that they want to go to rather than being laid off.” So far, the only other option besides shifting students to other schools starting with the fall semester is to face potential layoffs, he said.
Officials said they were refining the proposal based on feedback, especially the details on which schools would absorb students from the closed campuses.
