“You literally have young folks out here fighting fires," says Brandon Smith, a previously incarcerated firefighter and the executive director of Archive image of PGYCC youth firefighters leaving the camp for service assignments under CAL FIRE supervision, even with support from seasonal and out-of-state fire crews that are brought in to help. The hours become more relentless than usual. According to Smith, they might work 16 hours a day for 14 to 16 days straight. The hand crew alums we spoke to said they’ve worked or heard of others working 24 hours on, 24 hours off for weeks on end.
