Deborah Holt Larkin dug deep into the 1958 killing of California nurse Olga Duncan, which was arranged by her mother-in-law Elizabeth Ann Duncan

For most, childhood is something we look back on as a time of innocence and wonderment. Still, there’s often a definitive moment, the point where we realized the world was, in fact, a scary place — one filled with real-life monsters and horrific events.

Larkin says that while she always wanted to write about the case, it wasn’t her original intention to write in the form of a what’s called a “true crime memoir,” an increasingly popular sub-genre of true crime writing where the authors insert themselves into the story, whether directly or analytically.

“I realized the case was so stranger than fiction that there would probably be no editors or publishing houses that would want to publish it,” Larkin recalls. “What happened was too unbelievable.” While it might seem strange to some that a young girl would bond with her father by discussing the details of a murder case, these are the parts in “A Lovely Girl” that will likely resonate the most with readers. When her father passed away in 1987, Larkin says her mother gave her a black trash bag filled with all of her father’s old newspaper columns and stories from the Ventura County Star-Free Press.
