Idaho lawmakers are looking at criminalizing the use of mRNA vaccines, the technology in most COVID-19 shots.

There is no mention of COVID-19 in the bill, but Nichols later clarified she was referring to the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines that utilize the technology described by the CDC as teaching cells how to make a protein that triggers an immune response.

The assertion by Nichols, a BYU-Idaho graduate, that the vaccines were fast-tracked was questioned by Rep. Ilana Rubel, D-Boise, during the bill's initial presentation. The bill has since been referred back to the committee for a hearing. Two U.S.-approved COVID-19 vaccines don't use mRNA technology, from Johnson & Johnson, and Novavax. Last year, the U.S. Food and Drug AdministrationThe Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines make up the vast majority of shots given in the United States,of the 670 million doses administered nationwide through mid-February, according to Our World in Data.
