The cement ship docked at Seacliff State Beach pier is set to be demolished after recent severe storms in January caused damage to the pier, campground and seawall, California State Parks announced Feb. 16.

Santa Cruz Public Safety Superintendent Gabe McKenna told SFGATE that Seacliff State Beach is a cherished and frequently visited spot in the greater Bay Area. Jordan Burgess, deputy superintendent of California State Parks’ Santa Cruz District, told SFGATE that after consulting with engineers, the pier was deemed unrepairable, warranting its removal.
The atmospheric river event on Jan. 4 and 5 destroyed the ocean side of the pier, leaving the landward half severely damaged. Due to extreme wave activity from Jan. 6 through 20, the remaining part of the pier was “in a state of imminent collapse,” Burgess said.
