Iceland’s “herring girls” were at the heart of one booming industry that transformed the town of Siglufjörður for much of the past century. And now they are at the centre of another that is helping to revitalise this small coastal community – a five-hour drive north of Reykjavik – today. But as salted herring became a staple in many European countries, catching and processing the fish became its main focus and everything changed.
“The role of a herring girl was to be ready whenever the ships came in when the fresh catch was ready to be processed,” says Anita Elefsen, the director of the Herring Era Museum in Siglo. “They stood by those long herring boxes out on the pier, cutting the herring heads off, ripping the guts out. They had to be efficient and work hard. It was quite common to pack three barrels per hour, and their shift didn’t end until all the herring was processed.
