By four months postpartum, I felt well enough to give running another go.
Becoming a mother has been the most brutal and beautiful experience of my life I may have been out of breath and sweating, but as I reached the end of my four-mile run, I couldn’t help but let out an endorphin-filled ‘Whoop!’ It was less than six months after I’d given birth and the first time postpartum that I’d completed the weekly run club loop without falling behind the rest of the runners. It was a level of fitness that I doubted I’d ever regain and I was so proud of myself.
Over the next few days, I was in the labour ward being monitored, and unable to walk without assistance. I was too weak to move very far and even had to be repositioned to burp my baby after feeding. I was too weak to move very far For the next two months, I didn’t sleep for more than two hours consecutively and could barely walk for more than five minutes at a time without feeling physically exhausted, so running became a distant memory.
