Emma Barker already knew she was at an increased risk of breast and ovarian cancer
Emma Barker was standing in a hotel room in Thailand, celebrating her honeymoon, when she discovered a lump. The 29-year-old already knew she carried the BRCA1 gene, which increases the risk of breast and ovarian cancer.
But, when Emma was least expecting it, tragedy struck. Just three days into the special holiday Emma was putting on a bikini, ready to enjoy the Thai sun. Emma made the decision to keep the information from her husband, Tom, who had been so looking forward to the perfect holiday for them both to get a break from the real world. “I didn’t want to tell my husband, he had been really looking forward to our honeymoon,” Emma explained.
“I burst into tears and explained to my husband what was happening,” she said. “My husband went into practical mode, saying it could be all these other things. Each year around 8,000 UK women are diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer, which is usually a more aggressive form of breast cancer and more likely to return or spread soon after treatment, within five years following diagnosis.
“It felt like they were throwing the book at me when it came to my treatment. But if it comes back, they’ve already used the treatments which is terrifying,” shares Emma. The couple also had to face IVF treatment at that impossibly difficult time. Planned hormone therapy would effectively force the menopause in order to prevent the production of oestrogen feeding any cancer, and would likely make Emma infertile.
Emma took her treatment in steps but said there’s ‘not much dignity’ as a cancer patient, as she contended with the harrowing changes to her life. “We live in a three-storey house, I couldn’t walk up the stairs by the end.“I planned my own funeral, it was all done for Tom in case the worst happened. I didn’t tell him at the time, only once I was better – instead I told a friend where to find the plans if it was going to be that outcome.
“She’s the best thing that’s ever happened,” said Emma, whose doctors cheered down the phone when she shared the lovely news. “My daughter might have the gene, so I’m trying to do everything I can now to campaign for new treatments for her and for her own children,” said Emma.
