In this new column, we’ll be examining the celebrity couples that give us hope for our own romantic futures and trying to learn what we can from their well-documented bonds.is upon us, even though I distinctly remember the show’s first airing on October 3, 2006, whichmean that it happened sometime in the last few years .
At the start of the series, Eric and Tami are new to the fictional town of Dillon, Texas. They’re desperately trying to keep their daughter, Julie , out of trouble and not let their marriage be totally subsumed by the pressures of, respectively, coaching high school football and serving as a guidance counselor.
I’m not the first woman to fall for Coach Taylor against her will or against all the odds. In 2020, writer, actor, and director Mindy Kaling published the online-only short nonfiction essayit’s for “a stoic provider with a moral center so solid a team full of messed-up high school football players, and probably the entire state of Texas, could rely on it.”
I’m not really on the hunt for a “provider,” as I have no kids and can take care of myself perfectly well , but, like Kaling, I’m drawn to the calm, centered aspect of Coach Taylor’s personality.
Eric and Tami Taylor’s marriage wasn’t perfect, of course, but whose is? It’s precisely when the show allows you to get a glimpse of the tough stuff they’re up against, though, that their partnership feels less like a random TV pairing of hot, symmetrical people and more like something that two people have actually worked to create. They have chemistry, but it’s not over-the-top; they just seem like two married people who are actually still interested in occasionally having sex with one another.
