'If he is released, Sasha will have died for nothing' 💔
Sitting by her sister's graveside in Poulton Cemetery, Katie Brett fights back the tears. Her two boys, Konrad and Colton-Joe are beside her, eating sandwiches and visiting the place they call 'Sasha's garden'.
Sasha’s body was so badly injured she had to be identified through DNA from her toothbrush. Her family were told they could not see her in the chapel of rest and could only touch her through a blanket.After two harrowing weeks, Minto was found guilty of murder. He was sentenced to life imprisonment and told he must serve a minimum term of 35 years before he can apply for parole.
"We are now 10 years into Minto's life sentence. There is no guarantee he will ever be released, but why take the chance? Our pain will never end." Katie and her family would like to see Minto's sentence increased to a whole life tariff. Unlike a life sentence, where a killer can apply for the Parole Board to assess whether they still pose a risk to the public at the end of their minimum term, a whole life order means they will spend the rest of their days behind bars.
"In October 2009 he sexually assaulted another girl at college. He admitted it but the CPS did not pursue it because they said there was no real chance of a conviction. He had also been cruel to animals. Four years ago, Katie and Sasha’s mum suffered a stroke, which they believe was brought on by the trauma of what happened to her daughter. More recently she has been given a terminal cancer diagnosis and is unable to speak. Katie says: “We really want these changes to happen while mum is still here. We want her to see we are all still fighting for Sasha.
“When I had my son, the family liaison officer who supported us when Sasha died was my birth partner. We became good friends and I was so glad she was there but it was devastating. It should have been Sasha there to see my baby come into the world. “David Minto is evil. He took that away from us. The sentence he got was not long enough and I will never stop fighting for Sasha.”
