I have been called names, I’ve had racist remarks and I get threats of complaints if I don’t give in to a request
We chose to become GPs because we love to help people. The abuse we are getting is unacceptable
I remember attending our GP surgery with my family when I was five and being in awe of our doctor. He was a respected member of our community, someone we valued for the time and effort he put into looking after us. Seeing him in action inspired me to become a GP. I want to be clear that this is in a minority of cases, but it only takes that one abusive patient to have a ripple effect on the quality of care that is delivered to everyone else that day. They leave you feeling upset, distracted and deflated, when you want to give every patient 100 per cent attention and energy.is overwhelming the whole of the NHS.
I used to get very upset if I experienced abuse from a patient. But I have become somewhat immune to it now because it happens so often. I am almost 20 years in this job – has it toughened me up? Is this what resilience looks like?
