postponed, over and over again. It’s been tough, and it’s made me once again think about the whole process of excitement and the inevitable disappointments that are intrinsic in love affairs and long-term relationships.
Short of money and even shorter of confidence, I applied to Relate to become a marriage guidance counsellor. With neither enough cash nor enough humility to ask for help with my own relationship, I decided I needed to find the secrets of love another way.
The strange thing about disappointment, though, is that those who’ve suffered a lot of it in their lives, those who’ve been badly let down as children or mistreated in their teenage years, often find it hardest to bear. One would imagine that these earlier knocks would armour someone against future pain, make them tough and resilient, but that doesn’t seem to be how it works. Why might that be?
