It’s a tradition in Finland to plunge into the icy waters As the door slid open to the sauna and pool in my friend’s Helsinki apartment complex, I was immediately greeted by the sight of three stark naked women, drying off as I walked in. I averted my eyes quickly, in true British-style, embarrassed to have seen these strangers completely nude. On the opposite hand, my friend Vilma walked in unfazed.
My childhood summers were spent playing outside in 35°C heat with humidity over 80% – this felt like home. The small wooden sauna in Vilma’s apartment building smelled of fresh cedar, which was warm to the touch. A fire warmed coals in the corner, and Vilma filled a bucket with water and added a ladle. ‘You can either wear a towel or go nude. Either way is fine,’ she said, stepping into the room. ‘I’ll wear a towel,’ I quipped, immediately embarrassed.
