Building scams increased by nearly a third last year
increased by nearly a third last year, according to Advice Direct Scotland – which offers consumer advice in partnership with Trading Standards and the Scottish Government. Last year, a builder in Oxfordshire was jailed for over four years for leaving a series of homes unfinished, and pleading guilty to three offences of fraudulent trading where he promised unrealistic pricing and timetabling for his work.
Finding an architect and going through the planning process all happened relatively quickly. The pandemic delayed us finding a contractor a little bit but by the end of 2020 we had them on board to do the work. They said it would take eight months, but we assumed that was optimistic and figured it would more likely be 12. So we moved out and rented a place around the corner whilst the big structural work was being done. We budgeted about 150k for this renovation.
At this point, the builders were coming in four or five days a week, so we could see some progress being made. But then we started noticing red flags. The builders started only coming in once a week, then once every two weeks, then once every three weeks. Then we wouldn’t see them for a couple of months.
More money, more time. During this period, we both had bereavements in the family which meant we could use inheritance to sort out the mistakes, and try to get the job slowly but surely done. Not that that’s how we wanted to use our money. Obviously, though, we were very lucky to have the extra money, because if not for that we might have had to abandon the whole thing, which would have left us in a building site for the foreseeable future.
