Record numbers of young people have poor mental health - and the impact on mothers' careers could make the gender pay gap worse

Record numbers of young people have poor mental health - and the impact on mothers' careers could make the gender pay gap worse

“I’d use the school Wi-Fi and conduct work calls from the front seat. By this point I’d already had to reduce my workload considerably, and with all the interruptions, I struggled to get much done from the car, but after two suicide attempts, I couldn’t take any chances. I was willing to give up everything to keep her safe.”in 2023, an increase from one in nine in 2017.

It can be almost impossible to focus on your work when you know your child is really struggling. On top of the worry, there are the many calls to make, the unexpected disruptions and pick-ups, and the research, form-filling and multiple appointments with school, mental health professionals and local authorities.

“The situation dragged on, and eventually I got hauled into a meeting about the problem of my patchy attendance and last month I took early retirement to be at home for our son. I’d intended working another 10 years and quitting my job has had a significant impact on the family’s finances, eating into our savings for buying our own house. But being at home and available to deal with the situation, rather than struggling on at work is, for me, less stressful.

“Trying to get help for her daughter takes up so much of her time, what with battling with the school, local authorities and CAMHS to get mental health support. She is unable to make work much of a priority, and has even talked about walking away from it, painful as that would be – this is a successful business that she’s spent many years building up”.
