'To be quite honest, I’ve always had self-doubt.'
Alice has struggled with self-doubt Welcome back to How I Made It, Metro.co.uk’s weekly career journey series. This week, we’re chatting with Alice Dearing, 26, who is based in Loughborough and is the first Black female swimmer for Team GB. In 2019 she started considering a career in swimming. A year later, she competed in the Olympics. 2020 was also the year she co-founded the Black Swimming Association, an organisation dedicated to reducing inequalities at the pool.
It’s ironic that swimming has let me travel to some of the most amazing places that I wouldn’t have ever thought of going to. But then at the same time because of the training routine and because swimming is an eleven month, sometimes twelve-month sport, there’s very little time to travel the world as I would like to. But one day, one day I will! However, the sacrifices are very worth making, always very worth making and I wouldn’t be where I am today without making them.
