WARNING: Gains graphic descriptions in abortion debate
A student campaigning against the setting up of a Pro-Life group at the University of Manchester has spoken out about the online abuse that she and others have received.
The anonymously posted petition opened with the statement: "I am a concerned student at the University of Manchester, deeply troubled by the potential harm that could be caused by our university's Pro-Life Society. The existence of this society adds to an already prevalent stigma surrounding abortion, a legal right in our country. Women at our university should not have to face additional pressure or judgement on such personal matters.
She added that one of the campaigners had been told in a message, 'if you are raped and then you have an abortion, you're essentially as bad as the rapist'."I just started the Instagram page on a whim and it just started gaining traction really quickly, with people sharing the petitions, information against the society and some abortion access information," she said.
There is no suggestion that the abuse received by campaigners has come from the Manchester Pro-Life Society. "This means that while we oppose abortion, we are also concerned with other threats to life including assisted suicide, the death penalty, deaths occurring through poverty and poor living standards, structural issues in critical infrastructure such as the NHS, and climate change.
Greta Taylor, 21, a student from Manchester Metropolitan University was one of the organisers of the protest. There is no pro-life group at their union, but they have joined University of Manchester campaigners in solidarity. After the protest, footage which appeared to show several men fighting while crowds of protesters holding signs boo and heckle them emerged, but it is understood the fight was not related to the protest.
