“How long has it been for you?” is already a commonplace question among my friends. How long since shelter in place and isolation began, since our workplaces shuttered, since we saw a boy that didn’t live with us, since we became nervous about coronavirus in the news. How long? I lost both my jobs about two weeks ago; I’ve been in self-imposed isolation for almost as long. In less than a week, April rent is due.

Right now, approximately half my income goes to rent, depending on the time of year. I work for tipped wages, meaning I pay my bills with the singles people toss on my bars for their drinks, the dollars they leave if I am lucky or otherwise esteemed on a holistic notion of my “service,” which is not necessarily identical to my labor, for which I deserve payment.

And the brutal fact of it is we’re staring down the barrel end of a coalescence of unprecedented global emergencies. A lot of people in New York City are about to be much poorer, and a lot of people here will be without medical care or shelter — likely more than are already here, in our city’sI’m not writing today because I have incisive, technical knowledge of economic recession patterns or tenants’ rights laws.
