After Sarah Everard was murdered Claire Cohen hoped it would start real change, but in 2024 women are still unable to walk home without fear
A few nights ago, I was walking home from dinner with friends, when everything went black. I turned a corner on my usual 10-minute stroll from the local station to my house – through a small park and down a tree-lined alley beside the leisure centre – to find that the last two street lamps weren’t working. The gym had powered down for the night, the playground was empty and it was suddenly very dark.
Many women I know, especially those who live in the streets close to where Sarah was taken, feel the same way – that we’re no safer. How could we be? While some are finally being weeded out, after decades of being able to commit crimes in plain sight – such as former Met officer, convicted last year of 85 rapes and assaults – others are being welcomed through the front door. This month, Met officer Cliff Mitchell was found guilty of multiple counts of kidnap and rape, including against a child. He had been accused of raping a child before joining the force – which he did AFTER Sarah Everard’s murder.
Being aware of the problem isn’t the same as tackling it. The conversations around women’s safety might be louder but practical measures to improve policing, tackle perpetrators and actually protect women have been thin on the ground.
