Brent Matthews, left, speaks with Davis County Sheriff's deputies on April 13, 2023 in West Point, Utah. A youth soccer coach in northern Utah is now banned from city-owned parks and facing criminal charges over what prosecutors say was disruptive behavior toward a city worker.
Norwood proceeded to explain the issue she was having with Brent Matthews, who had showed up at the park with his youth soccer team. “I’m a civil litigation attorney. I know my rights,” Matthews told the sheriff’s deputy, adding, “you have no right to trespass me from the park. I’m a private citizen.”
“In my mind, it was just unacceptable behavior,” said Laws, the city manager. “I just didn’t feel like it was something that should be left undone.”The next day, a Davis County sheriff’s sergeant recorded himself calling Matthews with the news. A few days later, the Davis County Attorney’s Office charged Matthews with interfering with a public servant. Matthews, who works as an attorney in Clearfield, has pleaded not guilty and declined to speak with KUTV 2News about the case.Looking back at that evening at the park, Laws said he's especially troubled by one thing.
