Gareth Butterfield tests the stunning new bamboo-based smart bird feeder from Netvue
It's a great time of year to feed the birds that visit your garden. The weather is heating up and there is plenty of robins, blue tits and greenfinches who need feeding all year round.
Let me explain how these smart feeders work. The birds fly in to munch on the seeds you supply in the hopper and, as they feast, a built-in camera captures images and video footage and pipes it wirelessly back to your smartphone. It's made from bamboo, which is a more sustainable wood, and its minimalist design will suit a variety of gardens, including the more manicured and trendy ones.
It's remarkably effective. Certainly not 100% effective, but Netvue's algorithms are learning all the time, and I've found it to be one of the smarter smart bird feeders currently on the market. There is the option of adding a solar panel. Netvue can supply one, but I had a small one kicking around that plugged in to the USB port and it's kept it topped up throughout the summer months. Winter gloom might make this more of a challenge, but we'll see.
