In this week's Couple Therapy dilemma, sex and relationship therapist Nicola Foster advises on age-gap relationships and getting on with a partner's friends
While compromise is one of the cornerstones of a successful relationship, anything you do must be something offered with a willing heart, and agreements should run both ways. You should never feel obliged to please your partner at the expense of your own well-being. Bending yourself out of shape in order to please another never works long term.
If you speak first, let him know why it matters to you not to spend lots of time in bars or pubs. Wherever possible, avoid judgement and stick to your own feelings and experiences. It may be that you find out it is as simple as him missing you, or he may feel that not sharing these times together indicates something more fundamentally awry with the relationship. Once you’ve found out why it’s important to him, and he’s heard what is important to you, you can begin to see if there are alternative ways to get his and your needs met.
