Maggie Rogers wrote 'like a hundred songs' for her sophomore album, 'Surrender.' What followed was a process of clarifying the chaos.

No. I think it’s a lot of pressure, and I think it also sometimes can, it has—how do I want to say this? I think that content is its own art form. It’s an incredibly valid and important art form in the way people are communicating right now. And I think it’s a separate art form than making music. I’ve spent a lot of time working hard to be good at making music, and I’ve spent a lot less time working hard at content. [] So I don’t envy new artists right now.

Now that you’re in the official sophomore album era phase of your work, are there other musicians or artists whose careers you’re looking at as a map of what you want next? No! That’s what feels so exciting about this time. Whether it’s in the world or on social media or in music or in writing or in art, it feels fucking weird out there! Putting a dot on the map of the future feels futile.

There’s a real scarcity mentality sometimes in the entertainment industry where it always needs to be bigger or better. Something I really came to terms with in the pandemic was like,. I have so much more than enough. I got to make an album that I love in studios that I've always wanted to work with, with some people I love, and I can’t imagine anything better than that.

One more question: You’re famously able to associate sound with color via synesthesia. What does it mean that the cover forI make a mood board or a color palette—usually both—before I make any kind of music as a sort of exploratory demo phase. It helps me a lot with music production too, because I’ll know how to treat a synth or a guitar based on the colors of the record. It helps me understand tone. The colors for this record are black, brown, green, and this like, light tangerine color.
