Was Choco Rice better than Coco Pops?
Can the Lidl and Aldi's own brand cereals beat the nation's most beloved brands? Northants Live reporter Matt Harris, also an ex-chef and now a passionate home cook, has taste-tested three of the nation's favourites cereals against the equivalents from the two budget supermarket giants. Here's what he found.
According to Wikipedia, there were about 160 different types of cereal around in 1970 and by 2012, that figure had sky-rocketed to 5,000. In 2016, the US cereal market was valued at around $10 billion. I went to Aldi and Lidl to compare their cereals with some Great British classics - and one of them was, I'm sorry to say, the worst I've eaten.Weetabix has been a staple of British breakfasts for decades; especially in Northants, where the Burton Latimer headquarters has brought plenty of jobs and made the brand a part of our county's identity.I have to say, all three of these tasted exactly the same - a crumbly texture and deep wheaty flavour. But Weetabix was 12 for £1.
Genuinely horrendous. Just the worst; quite bitter with none of the sweetness but somehow, when I checked the packet, with even more sugar. The Aldi version was a passable alternative, but it left the milk more malty than chocolatey.Cheerios are one of the most popular cereals in the UK, offering a sweet option that isn't chocolate flavoured.
