The original I Am Legend's ending retcon allows I Am Legend 2 to fix another major original movie mistake. Based on Richard Matheson's novel of the same name, the original I Am Legend movie stays true to many elements of its source's storyline. Like the novel, it focuses on Dr. Robert Neville's post-apocalyptic adventure and his struggles with finding a cure for a mysterious disease that has turned the majority of the human population into monstrous creatures dubbed Darkseekers.
I Am Legend 2's Retcon Means The Darkseekers Can Finally Be Vampires, Not Zombies Following the retconned ending not only allows I Am Legend 2 to change Dr. Neville's fate and his perception of the Darkseekers but also gives it the opportunity to fix a mistake from the original movie. Although I Am Legend never explicitly calls its central creatures zombies, the film got caught in the zombie hype of the era.
I Am Legend 2's Time Jump Would Explain Any Darkseeker Changes Given the long gap between the release of the two movies, it would make sense for I Am Legend 2 to incorporate a significant time jump. Using this time jump as a narrative device, the I Am Legend sequel can introduce many changes that alter how the Darkseekers interact with humans and their surroundings.
