We’ve driven both—here’s how one of the most important comparisons of the year will stacks up once we drive them side by side.
:"From the way it looks to the way it drives to the advanced technologies it can put at the disposal of its drivers and passengers, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 is a sophisticated and intelligent electric vehicle, easily outclassing mass-market EVs from the likes of Volkswagen and Toyota and Ford."As we've well documented, Tesla is an automaker that defies gravity.
Tesla's total share of the global EV market last year was less than 20 percent, with just two models, and Model Y SUV, accounting for 97 percent of its sales. And that's why the Ioniq 6 is so important. It's a genuine Model 3 rival, a car that, at first acquaintance, has the chops to take on Musk's cash cow.The Ioniq 6 launches with three model variants
Tesla claims 0-60 mph in 5.3 seconds for the Standard Range Plus, 4.2 seconds for the Long Range, and 3.1 seconds for the Model 3 Performance.
Tesla, which typically works its batteries harder than anyone else, is generally best when it comes to range. We'll have to wait until we see the official EPA numbers, of course, and conduct our own real-world range tests, but in terms of overall combined range and performance, the Model 3 still looks to have the edge.
Despite all the hype, we've found Tesla's optimistically named Autopilot driver assistance system to be buggy and unreliable, occasionally shutting down without warning and not always bringing the Model 3 to a halt in situations when it should. And Tesla's Full Self-Driving upgrade remains a work in progress, an extraordinarily expensive option of questionable value that still can't do what it says it can do safely or legally.
The Ioniq 6 is bigger all around than the Model 3—6.7 inches longer overall, 1.2 inches wider, and 2.1 inches taller—and rolls on a 2.9-inch-longer wheelbase. But the numbers don't quite tell the full story: Rear legroom in the Hyundai is immense in contrast to that of the Model 3, a car that puzzlingly doesn't make the most of the packaging benefits of its electric powertrain.
