We’re in peak hurricane season, and there are a few other systems to watch.
Lee was named on Sept. 5 west of the Cabo Verde Islands, and quickly intensified. By Sept. 8, it was a Category 5 with 165 mph winds. It slowly weakened from there, remaining a large, powerful Category 3 for the better part of a week. On Sept. 16, it completed “extratropical transition,” morphing into a nor’easter and losing its tropical characteristics.
The focus now turns to whatever is next in the Atlantic. There’s already one hurricane out there — Nigel — and two other systems in different stages of development.Nigel became a Category 1 hurricane with 80 mph winds on Monday morning. The storm was located about 935 miles east-southeast of Bermuda, and was moving northwest at 12 mph.
